Even among owners of Acura automobiles not all are aware of the rich racing tradition that the automobile manufacturer has established. Almost from its beginning Acura has been active in racing and motorsports. Among the major milestones is an agreement with Comptech Racing to use the V6 motor of the Acura NSX in Comptech’s Camel Lights Spice prototype car. Acura won the championship that initial year and also had success in the 24 Hours of Daytona. The successful teaming of Acura and Comptech continued for several more years with additional championships and other notable distinctions.
Acura continued on to touring car racing with Realtime Racing in 1996. Featuring the NSX they competed in the SCCA World Challenge and won two races during the season. Acura Integras were also featured in some races. Realtime won the touring championship with the Acura Integra in 1998 and 2000.
Despite Realtime’s departure from the NSX program in 1998 the Acura NSXs continued to excel and participate through 2001. Acura Integras also took the teams championship. However, by 2002 Acura replaced the Integra with the Acura RSX in the latter races of the season and finished well. Subsequently Acura brought in the new Acura TSXs beginning in 2004.
Acura announced new racing plans at the Detroit Auto Show in 2006. Acura began featuring the use of American-built Acura V8 engines in purchased chassis from other manufacturers. Acura also announced plans to participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and entered their own cars in 2008 and 2009. Three Acura-powered prototype cars appeared at the 2007 12 Hours of Sebring. Eventually Acura began development of their own chassis by modifying their purchased Courage chassis. These modified cars took the name Acura ARX-01a.
