The Acura CL was introduced in 1997. More than ten years later many Acura CLs of that vintage are still providing reliable service for its owners. In 1997 the Acura CL was available with either a 3.0 L J30 V6 engine producing 200 hp or a 145 hp 2.2 L I4 engine.
The 1998-1999 Acura CL offered numerous luxury features including leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a Bose stereo system in both the 4 and 6-cylinder models. Some of the premium level features eventually became standard features on all CLs.
The wheel designs on the Acura CL helped distinguish the models from year to year. The initial 1997 version Acura CL was reported to suffer from failures of the driver side window mechanism. Acura to their credit replaced this defect under warranty and after warranty expirations.
The CL was not produced as a 2000 model. Rather the CL was released as a 2001 model with a VTEC J-series V-6 engine. The sport version of the car also offered a navigation system. The car evolution at that stage also included 17” wheels and upgrades to the suspension, brakes, and seats.
Next in the progression came the CL Type-S offered officially as a 2003 model with a 6-speed manual transmission. The manual transmission availability occurred after criticism that the manual transmission was not available in earlier models. In total around 3500 Acura CLs with manual transmission were built. Despite the relatively low number of the cars made the demand surpassed Acura’s expectations. The last model year for the car was 2003.
The CL and the successor TL models share some comparisons including the 5-speed automatic transmission, and to some extent problems that existed. To address some of the difficulties with the transmission Acura extended the warranty on the automatic transmission on some CLs and TLs for 7 years/100,000 miles.
